iATKOS on Dell Studio XPS 1640

Postby ElectronicWIz on Wed Jul 29, 2009 5:01 am

I am determined to get this working.
I Intend to add status to this as I go along.
I would like to thank Pere for adding the information on DSTD Solutions thread.

I have the dual boot system configuration that doesn't boot Mac OsX yet, but 64 bit vista does.
I can modify the partition of iATKOS if necessary. And return to Vista 64 bit to do more investigation an update this thread until I get it working.

Kernel Panic from:
IO PCI Family (2.6)
IO ACPI Family (1.2.0)
waits for the AppleACPIPlaform (1.2.4)

Today I am working to resolve the kernel panic due to the bios configuration for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)

I am going to attempt remove the AppleACPIPlatform kext and install other versions until I get past this.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Moved from previous thread...

Hardware:
Intel Core 2 Duo - T9800 Centrino 2
Internal WiFi - Wireless WIFI Link 5100
BroadCom Netlink BCM5784M - Gigabit Ethernet PCIE
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670.
Standard PS/2 Keyboard.
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad [Mouse] - Synaptics TouchPad Driver A02
827801 HD Audio Controller
RV635 Audio Device Radeon HD 3600 Series
ICH9M - LPC Interface Controller

I've tried the installation setups listed below:
Main System
Chamaleon V2
X86 Patches:
extra directory
DSDT - but bios doesn't have capability of turning off hyper threading.
Apple Decrypt
SMBIOS enabler
Kernel 9.7.0
Disabler
OHR
Remove TyMCE
Drivers:
VGA - ATI - HD - for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670
SATA/IDE - AHCI; Intel SATA/IDE
Intel Speedstep - SpeedStep; Throttling Control
USB
Sound - Voodoo HDA
PS/2 mouse keyboard - Vodoo PS/2 Driver with trackpad
Laptop Battery
NTSF
Network Wired - BroadCom - found in hardware
Need Network wireless for WiFi
Post-install Actions

It recognizes the ps/2 now as per the verbose messages.

Still getting kernel panic:
Warning Skipping Blacklisted AppleIntel CPUPowerManagement - Is this an issue?

Legacy Apple AHCI port is not loadable. - This is where it hangs.
I Have an AHCI Sata Drive and it's enabled in Bios.

Things are working with the vanilla kernel - booting up in safe mode.
I have MacDrive on the Vista 64 partition and am able to modify kexts and add the Netkas boot from the
DSDT thread. I also added Kext_Helper & the DSDT_Patcher this way.
Keyboard and Mouse are functional as well as the HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CA10N for burning and writing. I haven't tried to play bluray disks in MacOsX yet.
Graphics - see the ATI card, when I didn't install the kext. Just using the one that was provided in the vanilla version. USB is functional too.

Problem areas to resolve:
Firewire issues on safe boot.
Network card not recognized.
BroadCom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet is not functioning.
I know that there isn't anything yet for the WiFi Link 5100 AGN yet.
BlueTooth also isn't functioning yet.

Hi Oxygene2,

Ok... First things first. This is an advanced setup and you really have to know what you are doing to get things working. ... It will not work the first time guarranteed.

Make sure you backup your C drive with Norton Ghost or something before you begin.

Ok for starters try this setup.
Follow the Mikey mouse guide to install iatkos-v7... Print it out...
You cannot do anything to the bios but make sure you download the latest from dell.
Install the following only:
iAtkos
Chameleon v1
Extra
DSDT
Descriptors
ACPI - no cardbus - you will still get firewire errors but who cares at the moment.
Disabler
OHR
Remove TyMCE
SATA AHCI, IDE
Apple sound - will change this later
Apple PS/2
Laptop Battery
NTFS
All Broadcom

Boot the vanilla kernel only - No graphics - only instal Intel's later after safe mode and verbose boot.
Put in our Dell Vista cd after the apple safe mode boot.
goto repiar my computer, go to command prompt,
type in diskpart
select disk 0
select partition 1
active
exit
bootrec /rebuildbcd

After booting vista install EASYBCD this will work along with the chameleon v1.

Note:
Graphics for the ATI 3670 HD don't exist, however I am able to have a working machine with the intel video drivers only. It's functional enough for me to use my machine to develop IPHONE apps ect.

Other problem areas are the power management and sleep functionality. I had to tweek around by looking at other machines that use the same chipset.

No kext exists for the wifi 5100.

Success with iATKOS on Dell Studio XPS 1640

Postby ElectronicWIz on Thu Aug 06, 2009 12:39 am

Finally with a bunch of hacks I got this working with the 9.7.0 kernel.

Base Installation:
iATKOS
BootLoader - chameleon v1
Patches:
extra
DSDT
Apple Decrypt
9.7.0 Kernel
Disabler
Remove TyMCE
Drivers:
VGA - Intel
Intel SpeedStep - both
Voodoo HDA
Voodoo PS/2
Laptop Battery
NTFS - 3G
Network BrodCom578x - needs patch see below
Post Install

HP dv3540es patches:
Go to this thread; and download the drivers - don't try to install all of them - save them in a folder
I'll mention which ones can be used later...
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=155318&st=0
Download this driver pack it contains fixes for the ICH9M chipset and other cool things that will help.
Get the 2.4 Drivers pack for HP dv3540es

Dell Studio XPS 1314:
Go to this thread and download all the kexts and store them in a directory - again don't install them all.
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=161650
It's best to read this forum before selecting things.
There is a dell keyboard fix; however I like the voodoo PS/2 version. Not the voodoo trackpad version; this is a Synaptics touchpad not a trackpad. The trackpad will crash.

Dsdt patcher gui:
http://pcwizcomputer.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=150&Itemid=48
This includes an installer for the modified v1 chameleon with nextus. It has an installer package. pretty cool.

Kext Helper b7:
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Kext-Helper.shtml
This is necessary to install your kexts.

Network Card:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=127903&st=60&p=963461&#entry963461
Your network card is a broadcom BCM5784M don't be fooled by the hardware look up you device id in windows.
Download the http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=38086
Make sure you read the instructions... You can get the Hex editor here:
http://ridiculousfish.com/hexfiend/

Video Fixes:
The drivers for the ATI card do not exist yet.
Make sure you remove all the kexts for ATI in the System\Library\Extensions folder. Otherwise you will get a scrambled screen on boot. You will have to safely boot first with -x -v flags.

SD Card Firewire:
You can get VoodooSDHC.kext from:
http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,543.0.html
It's a beta and it works for me :P

Patches:
You can use AppleACPIPlatformFix found in the Dell Thread above.
You can use Chipset ICH9-M AHCI found in the HP Thread above.
You can use SATA drivers 1.5.0 build 294_ found in the HP Thread above.

This should get you working... In fact the only things that don't work are the ATI card and the WiFi 1500.
You will have a functioning system. I'm writing this out of MacOsx now.... :D

Note: There are some firewire errors still - 1 or 2 - I'm looking into them.

Now I've got to go see if I can write the kext for that WiFi 5100 card.

Sorry about the late response, I've been busy the past couple of weeks.

I'm waiting like everyone else on the ATI 3670, and Intel WiFi 5100...

I have graphics using only the Intel drivers.

ElectronicWIz, did you have much trouble getting the sound to work on your XPS 1640. I have got everything I need, for iPhone development, going on my 1640 using a Boot-132/Retail DVD approach, but sound would also be nice.

Have tried AppleHDA, VoodooHDA to no avail. Did you have to alter kexts with device IDs etc or did some go inside another etc

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

No, when I add 1920x1080 to Preferences, it, in fact, ends up as the somewhat non-standard resolution of1400x1050 .

Close enough for my purposes. Perhaps the Vesa driver doen't have the HD resolution.

Could you tell me how you managed to get the Intel drivers loaded? I'm currently using an iDeneb 10.5.6 install because i keep getting kernel panics with iAtkos 10.5.7.
The iDeneb is available with Intel drivers, and i have them selected during install. Still I only manage to get 1024x768.
So how did you get/install the Intel drivers, and where did you specify the 1400x1050 resolution?
Thanks in advance!

I can't tell you what the default video drivers/kexts are, if it works that way, but it's more a case of preventing unwanted kexts from loading. I got video fine on first installing 10.5.6 but on upgrade to 10.5.7 got a garbled screen. Removing the ATIRadeonX2000.kext got my screen back.

To adjust the resolution go to : /Library/Preferences/System Configuration

Copy com.apple.Boot.plist to the desktop where you can edit in TextEdit without permission needed.
Add :

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1920x1080x32</string>

to the other keys and copy back to the original location. It will prompt for a password and you're good to go on restart.

As I said earlier, it seems to result in keeping old standard ratios but at least you can increase the res.

I got sound to work a couple of ways....
It's a combination of the VoodooHDA, the AppleHDA, and HDAEnabeler, and the chipset kext.
You will find the intel chipset kext on the previous post for the HP platform.
You will find the AppleHDA and HDAEnabler modified kexts with the post on the Dell 1340.

Best of luck.
